Excellence in Construction Award Winners 2019



"This program recognizes the best of the best in the construction industry in Delaware and jobs our members do in surrounding states," said ABC Delaware President Ed Capodanno. "The program is open to and ABC Delaware general contractor or subcontractor. Our judges represent a cross section of the construction industry, but are not members of ABC Delaware. Thanks to the judges and all the companies who participated in this year's program."

Assurance Media is awarded an Excellence in the specialty/security category. Assurance Media designed and installed a powerful surveillance system at the James T. Vaughn Correctional Center. Officer safety and effectiveness have increased dramatically, and the staff is now backed up by one of the most advanced prison surveillance systems in the nation.

An Excellence is presented to Nowland Associates in the GC/CM $5-10M category for Amos Hall science facility at St. Andrew’s School. Nowland was selected in 2017 for renovations to their existing 26,850 sq. ft. building. The 18-month revitalization project resulted in a state-of-the-art STEM laboratory and is one of the first LEED version 4 certified buildings in Delaware.

Allan Myers is awarded and Excellence in the Site/Civil $50M and over category for the US 301 Realignment. Allan Myers partnered with DelDOT to realign 4.5 miles of US 301, alleviating congestion and supporting the growing community in Middletown. The new four-lane interstate was opened to traffic in January 2019, on schedule and within budget.

An Excellence in the GC/CM $2-5M is presented to BPGS Construction for DE.CO, which is a multi-purpose space, serving as a food hall, located in the DuPont Building. The project involved the demolition of existing office/retail space and the fitting out of an atrium bar, dining area, restrooms, dishwasher room and eight stalls.

Corrado Construction is awarded an Excellence in Site/Civil $2-5M for Datwyler Pharmaceutical in Middletown. For the design/build project, Corrado was part of the team that helped reduce costs and make design changes, all while still completing the complex sitework package two weeks ahead of schedule.

In GC/CM $5-10M category, an Excellence is presented to GGA Construction for the Georgetown, DE Hilton TRU. This was a 43,263 sq. ft. new construction building that was completed within a year timeframe. The hotel consists of 90 rooms, a fitness center, pool vestibule, gaming area, outdoor patio and exceptional lobby. Doors opened in June 2019.

An Excellence in the mechanical under $2M category is awarded to Service Unlimited for the Aldersgate United Methodist Church design/build HVAC replacement and upgrade project. The project consisted of two Carrier 15-ton split systems to serve the sanctuary and one 10-ton Carrier split system to serve the narthex, along with one 12-ton Carrier VRF system with six 2-ton recessed console fan coil unites to serve the auditorium.

BPGS is awarded an Excellence in the GC/CM $20-30M category for the Wilmington Sports Facility. The project is a 161,000 sq. ft. multi-purpose sports complex and youth training center. Home to the 76ers G-League affiliate, the Delaware Blue Coats, the complex includes indoor and outdoor turf fields, a sports performance facility and a sports medicine office.

In the electrical $5-10M category, The Tri-M Group is awarded an Excellence for Linde Americas in Claymont, one of the world’s largest suppliers of industrial, medical and specialty gases. The project upgraded and transformed its 10-acre facility into the company’s largest liquid merchant plant in the United States. Safety, detailed planning and constant communication were vital to Tri-M’s success.

DiSabatino Construction is presented with an Excellence in the GC/CM under $2M for the Christiana Hospital Hybrid Operating Room, which was an exciting and challenging project that brings a new and revolutionary surgery to Delaware for the first time. This high-tech project was finished on time and on budget by DiSabatino and the project team.

For work performed on the DuPont Wilmington Global Innovation Center, Master Interiors is awarded an Excellence in the specialty/carpentry category. Master’s expertise resulted in excellence as the company anticipated safety, quality and schedule above and beyond the owner’s expectations and produced a facility that displays professionalism.

M & S Painting is awarded an Excellence in the specialty/commercial painting category for the 76ers Fieldhouse, a new facility that houses Titus Training Center, Nemours Sports Medicine and the 76ers affiliate Blue Coats. M & S Painting could not be happier to work side-by-side with The Buccini/Pollin Group on another monumental building.

In the site/civil under $2M category, George & Lynch is presented an Excellence for the Little Creek Boat Ramp. The town of Little Creek, just east of Dover was looking to reinvent their maritime history. The town was looking for a way to attract more tourists and the fishing pier, boat and kayak launch ramp was the answer.

Wohlsen Construction is awarded an Excellence in the GC/CM$10-20M category for its work on the new Comcast Cable Communications Regional Headquarters & Call Center. Wohlsen provided preconstruction and management services for the 154,000 sq. ft. project which consisted of renovations to the existing facility, including administrative offices and a regional meeting center.

An Excellence is awarded to Diamond Materials in the site/civil $10M & over category for the SR1, NE Front Street Grade separated intersection in Milford, which was a DelDOT project consisting of the construction of an overpass over SR1. Diamond constructed on and off ramps, lighting, drainage systems, concrete curb and a shared path for pedestrians/bicyclists.

RC Fabricators is awarded an Excellence in the specialty/steel fabrication and erection category for Christiana Care’s Women & Children’s Health. No challenge to great, project too big. Four crews, over 20 skilled men and women, two large cranes, 3,000 tones of steel, 350,000 sq. ft and eight stories high created the new center which will service the healthcare needs of generations to come.

In the GC/CM $30-50M category, Bancroft Construction is awarded an Excellence for the Tower at STAR campus, which boasts 120,000 sq. ft. of flexible program space for the University of Delaware College of Health Sciences, with extensive opportunities to train the next generation of healthcare professionals with collaborative and inclusive inter-professional learning environments.

M. Davis & Sons is presented and Excellence in the specialty/rigging category. M. Davis installed the largest modular central utility plant to date, on the roof of the University of Delaware Biopharmaceutical Institute. Some of the largest cranes on the east coast were utilized along with cutting edge rigging practices.

An Excellence is awarded to Nickle Electrical Companies for the Comcast Call Center & Regional Headquarters in Newark. Nickle was responsible for installing new service to the 150,000 sq. ft. remodeled Comcast facility, including a massive 2.5 megawatt generator, a 625-KVA UPS system, fire alarm, floor boxes, light fixtures, electric car chargers, outdoor lighting structures and much more.

In the GC/CM $50 M & over category, EDiS is awarded and Excellance for Howard High School of Technology in Wilmington. Akin to building a ship encapsulated in a bottle the Howard project was a lesson in creativity, precision and planning. The EDiS team paid tribute to the history of Howard while elevating the building into modern times.

Assurance Media is awarded an Excellence in the specialty/telecommunications category. Assurance Media delivered leading edge telecommunications infrastructure for Comcast’s new call center in Newark. Completed in just four months, over 3,000 cables connect workstations and audiovisual equipment helping Comcast’s team handle thousands of calls a day.

An Excellence is presented to Ralph G. Degli Obizzi & Sons in the mechanical $5-10M category for Star Tower. The University of Delaware’s Star Campus includes a 10-story tower along with an audion and atrium. Degli Obizzi & Sons completed both the HVAC and plumbing for this 120,000 sq. ft. building over a two-year period. Being constructed on the former Chrysler plant and being the tallest building in Newark made this project extremely challenging.

In the GC/CM $100M & over category, an Excellence is presented to The Whiting Turner Contracting Company for the Bayhealth Hospital, Sussex Campus. The 440,000 sq. ft. replacement hospital located on a 165-acre greenfield site in Milford. The new state-of-the-art hospital provides expanded services for the community while providing a peaceful and comfortable space for both patients and visitors.



Merit Award Winners


In the specialty category of multi-craft—insulation scaffolding and coatings, Eastern Industrial Services is awarded a Merit for the Bayhealth Hospital Sussex Campus in Milford. EIDI delivered award winning multi-craft services in support of Whiting-Turner at the Bayhealth project. The thermal insulation, scaffolding and coatings teams delivered the required support for the aggressive project timelines. EISI followed their principles, assured quality installations and did it all safely.

A Merit is presented to Richard Y. Johnson for the Laurel Elementary School in the GC/CM category $20-30M. the new, 1,200-student elementary school replace two existing schools that were beyond their useful life. RYJ worked with the school district and design team to develop meaningful cost alternates which allowed the district to both control cost and get value on bid day, resulting in additional usable teaching space. The project was completed on time and under budget.

Wohlsen Construction is awarded a Merit in the GC/CM $30-50M category for Capital One Ben Franklin Wilmington Phase 1A. Wohlsen served as the construction manager for the project which consisted of complete renovations to 12 floors of interior office space across two adjacent high-rise buildings in downtown Wilmington, totaling 350,000 sq. ft.

A Merit is presented to Nickle Electrical Companies for Keen Compressed Gas in the electrical under $2m category. This design-build project for Keen included a brand-new warehouse, a fill platform and an office renovation. Nickle’s scope included new service to all areas, installation of explosion-proof devices and hookups to all CryoVation equipment on site.

In the mechanical category of $5-10M, a Merit is awarded to J.F. Sobieski Mechanical Contractors of the Chemours fit-out in Wilmington. This high-end project at the new location of Chemours headquarters included 125 meeting rooms, 73 conference rooms and 1 café per floor of the 106-year-old historic DuPont building. Sobieski completed the 254,794 sq. ft. of plumbing and HVAC on schedule using extensive planning and BIM design.

LC Construction is awarded a Merit in the GC/CM category $10-20M for 101 Avenue of the Arts in Wilmington. Formerly a brownfield site with unsuitable, rocky soil that went through conditioning and remediation is now modern luxury living on the Riverwalk in Wilmington. During construction, the safety of the community was kept in mind with covered sidewalks.

A Merit is presented to GGA Construction for the Brandywine YMCA in the category of GC/CM $2-5M. The Brandywine YMCA is a leading non-profit organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, health living and responsibility. This project completed in the summer of 2019, consisted of 19,000 sq. ft. of a second-floor expansion and renovations for the offices, fitness center, pool vestibule and pre-school.

In the site/civil category $10M & over, George & Lynch is awarded a Merit for the Bayhealth Hospital Sussex Campus in Milford. Bayhealth recognized years ago that the population of Sussex County is rapidly increasing. They build a new hospital along Route 1 utilizing integrated project delivery. George & Lynch was proud to be the sitework trade partner on this project.

Bancroft Construction is awarded a Merit in the GC/CM $5-10M category for the Delaware Innovation Space Incubator at DuPont’s Experimental Station. This project was partially funded by the US Economic Development Administration and provides the use of scientific equipment and laboratory space to aid in the innovation of potential early stage science startups.

A Merit is awarded to J.F. Sobieski in the specialty—fire sprinkler/fire alarms category for the Dover Air Force Base repair bay fire suppression system. Aggressive pre-planning, scheduling and coordination were key factors in successful completion of removing and replacing over 23,000 feet of piping. The 3-tier, 60-foot roof deck was finished on time in the eighth month of a 12-month contract.

In the specialty category painting, M & S Painting is presented with a Merit for the Rehoboth Beach Elementary School. The new construction project recently opened for the 2019-2020 school year. M & S Painting could note be happier to work side-by-side with Richard Y. Johnson on another state-of-the-art building.

Ralph G. Degli Obizzi & Sons is awarded a Merit for the Christiana Care patient kitchen renovation. Degli Obizzi & Sons provided all HVAC and plumbing work to renovate the existing patient kitchen at Christiana Hospital. The work was accomplished in six phases over three years without interruptions to the delivery of patient meals. All work was performed safely and under budget.
