Excellence in Construction Award Winners 2018

"This program recognizes the best of the best in the construction industry in Delaware and jobs our members do in surrounding states," said ABC Delaware President Ed Capodanno. "The program is open to and ABC Delaware general contractor or subcontractor. Our judges represent a cross section of the construction industry, but are not members of ABC Delaware. Thanks to the judges and all the companies who participated in this year's program."
EDiS is awarded an Excellence in the GC/Cm $30-$40 million category for the New Castle County Route 9 Library & Innovation Center.  It's a state-of-h-art library and community hub that provides to the surrounding community access to traditional resources as well as new technologies, creative production tools and skills development programs.
Wohlsen Construction is honored with an Excellence in the GC/CM $5-10 million category for the Fusco Athletic and Academic Center at Delaware Military Academy.  Wohlsen provided all the preconstruction and construction management services for the new 27,000-square foot state of the art athletic dome, which was the first monolithic dome constructed in the Mid-Atlantic region.
In the GC/CM category, Whiting-Turner is awarded and Excellence for the Incyte Corporate Headquarters in North Wilmington.  The facility is an ultra-high-end, modern office building situated along Augustine Cutoff.  The project consisted of a 355-space parking garage, 150,000-square food office building and seven acres of redevelopment from an existing parking lot.
in the GC/CM Category $20-30 million,, GGA Construction is awarded and Excellence for the 3,000-square-foot Sun Behavioral Health facility in Georgetown,  The new building entailed specific construction details required to provide mental health patient safety.  The new building was completed in 18 months and with a significant 10-percent cost savings and 20-percent energy reduction.
Wohlsen Construction is awarded an Excellence in the GC/CM category $70-80 million for the Datwyler facility in Middletown.  Wohlsen and Becker Morgan provided design/build services to construct a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility for the Swiss-based company.  The firs-of-its-type in the country, the building includes a 193,000-square foot process facility and a 30,000-square-foot office and lab building.
Bancroft Construction is honored with an Excellence for the Amtrak Wilmington Shops in the GC/CM $10-20 million category.  The project was very complex and intricate, involving new construction, upgrade and renovation to multiple facilities at Amtrak's hub for operations in the greater Northeast.  Safety and coordination were major themes of the project from multiple angles.
Ralph G. Degli Obizzi & Sons is awarded an Excellence in the mechanical $5-10 million category for Laurel Elementary School in Sussex County.  The two-story building consists of more than 153,900 square feet of classrooms, offices, gymnasium, kitchen & cafeteria and technology center, RGD & Sons provided all the HVAC and plumbing requirements for the project. Which was completed under budget and on time for the 2108-2019 school year.
In the Electrical Category $2-10 Million, Nickle Electrical is honored with an Excellence for the Incyte Corporate headquarters.  This project is the new 150,000 square foot facility that includes a four-story lobby, offices, kitchen, green roof, pickleball court, putting green and parking garage, Nickle provided all electrical components for both the new building and parking structure.
in the $2-5 million mechanical category, JF Sobieski Mechanical is awarded an Excellence for the Incyte corporate headquarters.  On an extremely aggressive construction schedule with many engineering and architectural modifications, Sobieski coordinated, fabricated and completed all mechanical and plumbing scoped for the new 154,000 - square foot, four story building and more than 119,000 square food garage.
Service Unlimited is presented with an Excellence in the mechanical under $2 million category for the Rogers Corporation chiller upgrade project.  This was an HVAC design-build project to replace their 30-year old HVAC System with a new Carrier 400-ton chilled water system, to serve a 30,000 square foot front "production area".
In the GC/CM $2-5 million category, Nowland Associates is presented an Excellence for the new 10,000-square-foot tasting room and banquet facility of Chateau Bu-De in Chesapeake City, Maryland.  The project has proven to be a huge success and could not have happened without the collaborative spirit of the entire design and construction team, many of whom are ABC Delaware members.
In the GC/CM $40-50 million category, The Whiting-Turner Contracting Company is awarded an Excellence for the new 143,000-square foot South Academy Street Residence Hall at the University of Delaware. The hall combines traditional residence hall aesthetics with a modern student experience.  This project truly accomplished the goal of providing cutting-edge amenities for its student while staying true to its history.
In the specialty trade roofing category, Tri-State The Roofers receives an Excellence for the Incyte corporate headquarters,  This contemporary state-of-the-art building is the global headquarters for the company, which employs more than 475 people in the Wilmington and was constructed by many ABC Delaware members.
In the site/civil $2-5 million category, Corrado Construction is honored with an Excellence for the Rehoboth Beach City Hall project.  The two-year endeavor required experience and dedication of the entire team to meet several challenges, including limited space, blending old infrastructure with new design elements and ann innovative approach to storm water management.
Master Interiors is presented with an Excellence in the specialty trade metal studs/drywall/acoustical ceilings category.  The Wilmington University Brandywine Campus project tested all of Master Interiors' skills and resources.  The company was involved from the early stages of construction with structural CFM to the last interior finishes with entrance mats, IDEA boards and door hardware.
In the Electrical category $2 million and under, Nickle Electrical is awarded an Excellence at St. Andrew's School  This was  9,000 square foot renovation to St. Andrew's existing medical annex and upgrade to a 389 square foot electrical vault that supplies power to surrounding building on campus.
In the specialty trade category of steel fabrication and erection, RC Fabricators is honored with an Excellence for Laurel Elementary School.  More than 1,200 students will learn in the state of the art 160,000-square-foot, two-story structure's two sprawling wings with more than 60 classrooms and common-spaces forged from over 700 tons of steel.
Spacecon is awarded an Excellence in the specialty trade carpentry and architectural category for the dining hall at DuPont's Experimental Station.  Spacecon completed the architectural finishes of this antiquated dining hall and conference center with demolition followed by installation of Armstrong ceiling clouds and construction of radius partitions with three-form accented wall caps and new aluminum handrails.
George & Lynch is awarded an Excellence in the site/civil under $2 million category for Atlantic Avenue in Bethany Beach,  The area is frequently flooded when there is excessive rain or unusually high tides.  With the innovative use of porous asphalt pavement, water can flow through the pavement and subbase material, reducing flooding.
In the specialty trade installation & fabrication category, MDavis is awarded an Excellence for the DuPont cooling tower at the company's Experimental Station.  The tower was assembled using modular construction to accommodate the tight footprint.  Innovations such as virtual modeling and air casters to  move heavy bases are noteworthy and saved time and money.  The project was completed with zero accidents or incidents.
In the Specialty trade category telecommunications & AV, Assurance Media is presented with an Excellence for the SoFi project in Claymont.  Assurance Media provided SoFi with exceptional telecommunications and audiovisual infrastructure.  The structured communication build-out reaches 00 locations around the facility and 70-inch digital signage displays are network-controlled and keep the SoFi team working smart and savvy every day.

Merit Award Winners

In the electrical $2-10 million category, Bausum & Duckett is awarded a Merit for the Wharf Parcel 5 project in Washington, D.C.  The project consisted of two separate brand hotels, Hilton, Canopy and Hyatt House, nestled on top of a two-level below-grade parking garage that's pinned against the Potomac River, Bausum & Duckett is proud to be a part to this latest addition to the District Wharf.
GGA is honored with a Merit in the GC/CM under @2 million category for First State Montessori Academy.  The renovation and fit-out of the third floor was implemented to accommodate 4th-, 5th-, and 6th-grade students.  Keeping with the interior design of the building, original crown molding and window frames were reused, saving the school a significant amount of money.  The project was finished two weeks ahead of schedule and under budget.
In the specialty trade category of design/build.  County Group Companies is awarded a Merit for the DART Lewes Transit Center.  The Delaware beaches now have a state-of-the-art transportation center, which includes a signature component, a wave canopy and bus-boarding shelter.  The new design combines innovative thinking with functional and aesthetics.
For its work on the Route 9 Library in New Castle, Ralph G. Degli Obizzi & Sions is awarded a Merit in the mechanical $2-5 million category.  For the single-story, 45,000-square-foot building.  Degli Obizzi & Sons handled all the HVAC and plumbing requirements for the project.  The complex architecture presented many challenges, but Degli Obizzi was up to the challenge.
For its work on the Christiana Care Wilmington Hospital Helistop, Whiting-Turner is presented a Merit in the GC/CM category of $2-5 million.  The Wilmington Hospital South Tower Helistop project consisted of the addition of a 2,500-square-foot aluminum Helistop constructed over the existing roof on the hospital's nine-story tower.  The hospital was occupied and operational throughout the entire project.
Eastern Industrial Services is awarded a Merit in the specialty trade insulation and firestop category for Laurel Elementary School EISI performed thermal systems insulation and firestopping, partnering with Ralpb G. Degli Obizzi & Sons under the direction of Richard Y. Johnson & Son, to complete all the required work on time and on budget, where safety and quality with productivity result in success.
BPGS is awarded a Merit in the $50-60 GC/CM category for the Residences at Mid-Town Park, an upscale residential community that includes a five-story subterranean garage and two multi-story apartment buildings,  Mid_Tower offers a resort style pool, fitness center, demonstration kitchen, screening room and resident lounges.
In the mechanical under $2 million category.  Harry Caswell is honored with a Merit for Sun Behavioral Health in Georgetown.  Harry Caswell would like thank GGA, company and employees and everyone who made this project possible.  Sun Behavioral Health will help our community for years to come.
