2021 STEP
Changes to the application for 2021
Much of the application is the same as last year. You may see some small changes throughout the application, but the biggest changes this year are:
- The EMR will still be requested in the application, but will no longer be a threshold requirement to get to the Platinum or Diamond levels.
- Suppliers have their own set of Key Components this year. When a supplier applies, the Key Components page is different from the contractor Key Components page. The supplier Key Components are attached, and the contractor Key Components along with the rest of the STEP materials can be found on the STEP application homepage.
- ABC will no longer accept paper applications. All applications must be submitted online. We will, however, be providing a PDF version of the application that members can fill out so they have their information handy when they fill out the online application. The PDF version is still being developed, but will be available with other STEP materials on the STEP application homepage within the week.

We encourage all of our contractor members to complete the STEP application on a yearly basis and be rewarded for your outstanding safety record.
Here are some frequently asked questions about why you apply for the National STEP Awards:
1. Who should complete the STEP application?
Founded in 1989 as a safety bench marking and improvement tool, STEP has evolved into a world-class safety management system that dramatically improves safety performance among participants regardless of company size or type of work. Participating ABC member firms measure their safety processes and policies on 24 key components through a detailed questionnaire with the goal of implementing or enhancing safety programs that reduce job-site incidents.
2. What are the STEP achievement levels?
There are six levels of STEP achievement: Diamond, Platinum, Gold, Silver, Bronze or Participant.
3. Is there a fee to participate in STEP?
There is no application fee for STEP involvement at the Participant, Bronze, Silver or Gold recognition levels when you submit your application online at http://www.abcstep.org/ .
There is a fee for each Platinum application submitted. This fee is only refundable if the application does not meet the minimum 20 Key Components qualifying score; any application submitted that does not qualify based on the Incidence Rate, Experience Modification Rate (EMR) and fatality qualifying criteria listed in the application instructions below WILL NOT BE REFUNDED. Payment information should be submitted with the Platinum application; failure to do so may result in processing delays.
